Use one of the appropriation strategies we looked at today or develop your own β presentation and style are at your discretion. Using Photoshop, make three or more separate images that relate in content. Include a brief text to contextualize your work.
What does it mean to be truly wealthy? How do we define wealth taken out of context of societal norms?
In an attempt to challenge what it means to be wealthy in our society, I combined advertisements of the most expensive luxury handbag brands and photographs of impoverished refugee camps. I hope that the juxtaposition of the blatant disparity between the two images will help to shed light on the darkness of ignorance.
How can we get carried away in the current of our societal ideals when we see that true wealth may not be buying another luxury bag, but helping others in need. Would women spend their money on handbags if they had to carry them through the refugee camps full of starving children?
We can use the excuse that it is all relative, until itβs not anymore. With these images I am bringing two seemingly different realities into one. I would love for these images to help people feel worse about themselves for buying in excess, not better.
How many bags, watches, cars, and shoes does a person need? Let us look inward to ask ourselves the important questions, instead of relying on others for the answers. Maybe we could redefine what it means to be wealthy, and learn to use our money more wisely
